The Darndest Things: She Can’t Read

January 6, 2009 by Brandy Vencel

This is a story I’ve told way too many times already, but I don’t want that to stop me from posting it to the blog. After all, this is where I keep up most of my job as Family Historian so that we can tell the same funny stories in twenty years.

Little A., our resident three-year-old {almost four!}, has recently dropped her afternoon nap. After getting over my horror, I had to decide what to do with her during Quiet Time. I decided to train her to do what our son does, which makes perfect sense, but is intimidating because of her personality and age. Our son, after all, only quit taking naps a few months ago.

I have never had a three-year-old up in the afternoon.

So I’ve been telling her to grab three books and find a spot to sit and peruse them and be quiet. We’ve also added in quiet activities like coloring a couple times, and during our Holiday Break, the children often enjoyed afternoon hot cocoa as well.

One day, when Si was home, A. was told to grab three books and have Quiet Time. She was very obedient and promptly took a selection and parked herself on my bed. After about forty-five minutes, she stomped into the living room, obviously frustrated.

“Dad! I do what you say and I take free books and I go and I weed them and it not working!” She stopped momentarily for effect. Then, she dropped the bomb: “I can’t weed!

“You can’t read?” Si asked. We were both trying so hard not to laugh at her. She was just darling.

“No!” she exclaimed in a whiny voice. “I can’t! I fink you need weed to me.” And then she pointed to me. “And you need teach me to weed.”

Well, how do you say no to that? For once, “Quiet” Time consisted of Si reading aloud.
