There’s another new Scholé Sisters episode out, and I think you’re going to love it. I can’t tell you what a great time I had talking Latin shop with Angela Reed from The CM Latin Project.

I was complaining at park day a while back — or was it at our mothers’ reading group? (Apparently, I can’t keep track of the many locations at which I complain.) The topic was shaving — specifically teaching daughters to shave and what a pain it is sometimes — and why is all shaving cream contaminated with gross stuff I would never under any conditions put on a child’s skin? And also why are razors generally terrible quality? Why is razor burn even a thing?
Sigh.
Naturally, Hayley saved the day. She told me about Harry’s and their amazing razors. I was thinking these were for dudes, but they were having a deal, so I bought three razors for what I expected to pay for shipping — one each for my daughters, and one for me (I’ve been trying to replace my razor for years and couldn’t find anything I liked).
Here is my one word review: WOW.
I mean seriously, where has this razor been all my life? I don’t care if it’s for dudes! THEY CAN LEARN TO SHARE, that’s my opinion.

To go with it, Hayley told me to use Dr. Bronner’s Shaving Gel. I don’t need gel, but I thought it might help the shavers-in-training. I chose the unscented kind, just in case. (One can never be too cautious about these things.) We bought a little pump for it as well because the reviews warned me they might waste a lot of it otherwise.
Newsflash: all shaving problems have magically disappeared!
Basically, Hayley has taken a negative thing around here and turned it into a positive. So much happiness!!

This month in 2014:
On Monday, I had to remind myself of this. My stress level was building, and shortly thereafter I realized the cause: people interrupting each other, and people all talking at once. I’m not naming any names, but they are all on the short and/or immature side.

This week’s links collection:
- King Solomon, The False Mother, and Alfie Evans from Public Discourse (The Witherspoon Institute)
- Read this; it’s really good.
- Increased incidence of cervical cancer in Sweden: Possible link with HPV vaccination from Indian Journal of Medical Ethics
- No comment.
- Teaching manners to children, part 1 from Landscape Plotted and Pieced
- I’m thrilled Kelly is writing this series, especially since I was recently alarmed at a certain level of rudeness in my own home, and as a result I’m taking courtesy extra seriously right now.
- You should probably subscribe to Kelly’s blog (or bookmark it or something) so you can keep up with it.

I borrowed my husband’s razor once, and told him he was never getting it back. They put safety wire on women’s razors, which prevents a close shave and makes itchy stubble. But men’s razors don’t have them! Plus they just sturdier. My sister introduced me to using a tiny dallop of conditioner as shaving cream (I hate extra bottles and such in the shower). It works like a charm!
So nice of them to keep us safe like that. 😉
And also: I like your conditioner idea! Genius!
Just for the record you weren’t complaining. I actually asked you what you did for shavers-in-training because some day I would be moving into that phase of life … and I needed some reassurance. During the conversation you pined for a different solution for your household. And, I like that I get to have some good ideas once in a while. Harry’s really are the best, and that price!
It’s funny — I remember this as me complaining! Ha! Shows where my mind was…
Brandy, have you ever looked at Norwex? I use the body scrub mit, and i no longer need shaving cream. Plus, I can use the cheapest razors on the market. No razor burn ever, no chemicals. It’s great! I can’t explain exactly how it works, but after I run my skin with it, I can shave.
I use a lot of norwex stuff, and a huge amount of chemicals are gone from my house.
Your “no comment” made me giggle, and I say, “mhmm.”
Also, “courtesy” as the “overall goal of treating one another the way we ought to treat fellow bearers of the image of God.” is an absolutely beautiful thought.
Thanks for linking me! I’ve asked my kids to read the post and help me remember specifics — it’s amazing how much you forget when you’re no longer in the thick of it.
You are so welcome! I love that you are writing this. Who knows? Maybe this series will be the beginning of a whole living book on courtesy. I’d buy it, especially if you made it perfect small bites for Circle Time (hint hint)! ♥
When I was on the early end of mothering, I wrote certain blog posts because I considered that I might forget. At the time, I felt like I wrote those too much — they were maybe boring? It was tricks I discovered about organizing and mothering that made things smoother. Now I wish I’d written more because it all seems to have become a gray haze. I can only imagine how much more it will fade with time!
You know, I’m nearing the end of my homeschooling career and have begun thinking about what to do with myself. I’ve spent nearly half my life homeschooling. It’s crazy to think of not doing that any more. You’ve given me something to consider. 🙂
This excites me. If you write it, I will test drive it for you!! ♥
I was thinking about how when Charlotte Mason says that children should have freedom with their spending money, she also says this should be coupled with the father giving the children “large thoughts about money” or something like that. So you can give them examples, but also large thoughts about courtesy and manners! It will be great! ♥
I think it sounds like the perfect post-homeschooling activity! 🙂
I have been using men’s razors for years. They are made way better than women’s.
I wish I’d known earlier! You are so right!
