What we do — the reading of many, many books (some of them quite old), narrating, reproducing, observing, and so on — can seem so different to people unfamiliar with it that it sounds new to them. They doubt you automatically. Taking a bold risk with those children of yours, aren't you?

I mean, if you don't ask your seven-year-old to write a bad essay concerning his summer vacation, are you even educating? 😂

You know what's risky? Chasing the latest popular thing. Listening to culture's siren song. (You do know what sirens do, yes?)

You know what's not risky? Looking at your goal, looking back into the past to see what roads once consistently led people to said goal, and then travelling that exact same road.

It's dangerous to make stuff up or follow whatever is the Latest Thing because, as much as we like to joke about it, children aren't guinea pigs. They deserve better than that. They deserve something that has already proven itself.

Books, narration, thinking, reproducing, observing? Latin? The progymnasmata? They have proven themselves lo these thousand years. It feels different because it IS different from the culture around you, but as Krista Bontrager from @centerforbiblicalunity said in a different context earlier this week, "You are going to have to be more courageous than your culture."

This type of courage isn't rashness. Imitating the great things of the past isn't dangerous. These roads have already proven themselves.

The roads are safe.

Tell me you have two teenage daughters without telling me you have two teenage daughters. 😂

The younger one saw me open The Surrendered Single and was *horrified* 🤣 — I just laughed and told her I was living a Jane Austen novel with all these children to marry off.

She was not impressed. 🤷‍♀️

The book on the right was one I read in college. After reading it, I broke up with my boyfriend (who I later married). It was the best thing I ever did.

Neither of these are Christian books, and they need a huge dose of Christianity, without a doubt. But I also look around and see lots of sweet single young women who don't know how to handle men. Something must be done, and I'm reading up because, honestly, I've been out of the game for a long while now.

The tips in books like these aren't the whole story, but they are definitely part of the story. There are basic mistakes some girls don't realize they are making because the world is constantly telling them that males and females are the same.

But they're not, and trying to relate to guys the way you do your girlfriends is the biggest mistake of all ... if you want to actually get married (to a decent man) someday.

So.

I'm going through these, pulling out the gems, and reading them aloud to my girls (and leaving the immoral and otherwise unacceptable stuff behind, of course).

My mother did this type of coaching for me, and I think I was the better for it. Hopefully, my girls will feel the same.

Mystie, Abby, and I are discussing that most misunderstood of #charlottemason concepts: #masterlyinactivity — THIS PHRASE IS NOT A REFERENCE TO YOUR CHILD'S FREE TIME.

It's so hard to get this idea out of our heads because a number of people in the Charlotte Mason community use the phrase incorrectly all. the. time. (I had it wrong once, too, by the way.)
